Why offline matters for calls

Calls are among the most sensitive things we do at work: customer details, prices, health information, job interviews, legal matters. Most transcription services upload the audio to their servers to process it. Call Transcriber doesn't. It uses a speech recognition model that runs on your PC's processor, so the audio is turned into text in memory on your machine.

What stays on your PC

  • Audio: processed in memory and never uploaded. Saving audio as WAV files is off by default.
  • Transcripts and call details: saved as files in your user folder, or a folder you choose.
  • Names and notes you type for calls.
  • Logs: technical events only, never what was said. They are shared only if you choose to send a diagnostics file to support.

What reaches our server is limited to your email address, an anonymous code for your PC and your licence status, so we can run your trial and subscription. Payments go to our payment partner. Details: privacy policy.

The speech engine

Call Transcriber uses a state-of-the-art open speech recognition model in an optimised 8-bit version that runs on ordinary laptop processors, no graphics card needed. In our tests on an Intel Core i5 laptop it transcribed about 10 times faster than real time, and it got 95.5% of words right on clean English speech (a 4.5% word error rate) and about 92% on phone-quality audio.

The model is downloaded once (661 MB) during setup or the first time you use the app. After that, transcription works without internet.

Optional: cloud with your own key

If you need Hindi and English mixed in one call, or want a cloud engine, you can add your own Deepgram API key in the advanced settings. Only then is call audio sent to Deepgram, under your own Deepgram account and terms. It's off unless you turn it on.

No bot, no host permission

Cloud note-takers usually join the meeting as a participant or need access to your calendar and meeting accounts. Call Transcriber needs neither: it transcribes the sound on your PC, the same way you hear it.
